The dugout at Anfield during the Tommy Smith Testimonial game versus a Bobby Charlton XI on May 27 1977. From left to right: Steve Heighway, John Toshack, Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan, Terry McDermott, Jimmy Case, Kevin Keegan, Ray Clemence, David Johnson and David Fairclough. Photographer Steve Hale: “This photograph was taken on one of those wonderfully warm late spring nights. It also just happened to be the night of Tommy Smith’s testimonial match at a packed to the rafters Anfield. It also happened to take place shortly after Liverpool had won the European Cup for the first time in Rome.
"The atmosphere inside Anfield was very happy and importantly for me very relaxed. That wonderful mix gave me the opportunity and the freedom of movement to sit just in front of the bench for a short time and take this image. You can see the happiness and the relaxed feel in the faces and body language of both the players and the fans. A sheer communion of joy. The ten players in the dug out would cost an absolute fortune now individually or collectively. However, nothing could buy the collective atmosphere of happiness, pride and joy felt inside the ground  that night.” Anthony H (Young fan pictured third from left on top of the dugout): “It was the end of an amazing week for a 14 -year-old.  I had been to the Cup Final at Wembley the week before and was gutted after Manchester United had beaten us. I was even more upset as I was not going to Rome as my dad had just been laid off from work. After the victory in Rome, like everyone, I was on cloud nine. On the Friday I stayed off school and we went to the ground about 2pm. I always went in the Boys Pen or the Kop in them days but my dad put me in the front of the queue for the Paddock so we could get near ‘Big Ears’. I must have been first in the ground and legged it to the dugout, where I stayed for about two or three hours until the match kicked off. I remember supporters coming in the ground around half-time because they’d just got back from Rome!”
