We were the boys. October 3 1984: Young Liverpool fans watch on at Anfield as their team smash four goals past Lech Poznan in the European Cup. The lad in the liverpool cap is Mick Fagan who was nicknamed ‘Fagger’ in our school and I am directly to the left with the dark hair as you look at the picture. I’d always wanted to go to the game but my mum wouldn’t let me. Mick’s dad offered to take me and him about 5:30pm and I ran home to beg my mum to let me go and give me the couple of quid to go. She reluctantly agreed and we excitedly ran all the way back to his dad’s and all travelled to Anfield in a black cab. "Even though the ground wasn’t full, I was amazed about the size of the Kop and the amount of people in it when we walked in through the side entrance. All the young lads clambered onto the railings at the front for the best specs and me and Mick got our best view possible right near the goal whilst his dad stood behind the crash barrier keeping watch over us. I remember how the floodlights lit up the stadium and how incredibly bright and green the pitch looked. Pre-match the players came really close, kicking signed flyaway footballs into the Kop when they came out, and when Johnny Wark scored his hat-trick goal he came within touching distance of us when celebrating with his arms aloft. We spent all day in school talking about the game the next day and the match was just the beginning of a lifetime of following LFC throughout Europe for me."
